iTunes Dumps The DRM

Apple today announced several changes to the iTunes store, most notable of which is that the company is eliminating digital rights management (DRM) from their downloads. The change comes at a cost however, Apple bending to the recording industry's long-standing demand for variable pricing. Apple's now delivering single tracks for 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 -- with the price tag determined by the major labels and a song's popularity and/or age. Apple also announced that iPhone users can now ...

TF:Netgear has just announced its Internet TV Player, a set-top box that allows users to play content from video streaming sites like YouTube, directly on their TV. Perhaps of more interest is the device’s built-in BitTorrent client, which makes it an ideal TV-torrent player as well.

The RIAA recently announced that they'd struck closed door deals with several ISPs to boot repeat P2P pirates off of their networks. The only ISP we're sure has signed on to this so far is Cox -- and despite what they tell their subscribers, the DMCA does not require ISPs to participate in this project. If anything, the DMCA's safe harbor provisions protect ISPs from having to participate in a system that's going to be costly and potentially unreliable.

Imagine you just got done reading about BitTorrent and all the wonderful things that it can provide. Hey, maybe you even want to just use the Vuze content store. Or perhaps there are a few creative commons movies that struck your interest. Wouldn’t it be nice to download them? Too bad you’re living on a college campus which prohibits BitTorrent use. Too bad your network administrator’s response to traffic bottlenecks is to block access to P2P technology. Looks like you might as well ...

So what can be said about the year 2008 in file-sharing? It’s been a long year for the P2P community. While there were no earth shattering events on the scale of 2006’s raid on The Pirate Bay, there were enough developments that kept things interesting.

January

Although it’s not often times for celebration in the P2P world, MiniNova, perhaps the largest BitTorrent indexer, found cause. In January of 2008, it celebrated 3 years online. It would be the first of several achievements ...

A refresher: the mobile version comes in four flavors, all of which offer 4Mbps/384kbps connectivity, but with different bandwidth caps ($30/month for 200MB, $40/month for 2GB and $50/month for unlimited). Things are looking really good for the Swedish Pirate Party. Running up to the 2009 European Parliament elections more than half of all Swedish men under 30 are considering voting for them. Thanks to the Internet, its membership has grown 50% during the last quarter, surpassing that of the well established Green Party.

The new startup company FilmOn has claimed that they will offer HD video streaming with little to no buffering time using a new compression technique they call HDi.

Using HDi, the company says the footprint of HD videos can be reduced to 2Mbps. The service did not explain how that type of compression is accomplished.

Many of the movies available on the site are free as well and costs are offset by private financing and the use of Amazon Web Services for hosting.
